East-West Intermodal Logistics

The first two pictures show a TEC Container Spreader BA-110 grasping and lifting a heavy forklift truck. The location is the East-West Intermodal Logistics Plc. terminal in Hungary.

Situated near Fényeslitke, close to the Hungarian–Ukrainian border, the EWG terminal is set to become a linchpin of European logistics, acting as a true ‘gateway’ between East and West. The terminal has a theoretical capacity of around one million TEU per year, with wide-gauge and standard-gauge rail tracks running alongside each other to expedite traffic.

In short, the terminal must handle volume, velocity and variety. It must handle containers, road trailers and rail bogies while maintaining masterful control over timing, load movements and network links. It is a hub, a pivot and a crossroads where logistics, geography and politics converge.

The TEC Container BA-110 spreader is a heavy-duty lifting frame designed for oversized and non-containerised cargo. The unit shown in the image has several of these features. The displayed BA-110CF2 model has a Safe Working Load (SWL) of 50 tonnes. It is designed for use with gantry cranes and reach stackers via a central lifting lug system. The frame is built with reinforced, closed-box side beams, which increase torsional rigidity and prevent deformation under off-centre loads. The four end brackets and lower hook points indicate that the spreader can be used with slings, fixed lifting chains, or special lifting adapters.

Take another look at the first picture: the BA-110 is lifting a heavy forklift held by wide straps from the lower plate of the spreader while a gantry crane guides it across the terminal yard. Suspended in mid-air, the forklift appears to be only seconds away from being placed onto a waiting trailer or rail wagon. The photo captures a moment of transition — the load floating between origins and destinations, road and rail, futures and footprints.
